As a mother, I often find myself running around the house, trying to keep everything tidy and clean. I make sure everyone is fed, that all doctor appointments are booked, that everything is planned, and that bills are paid.
When my child is at school, and my husband is at work, I have a unique window of time when I can be by myself. I choose to paint during this time of day, when my household tasks are not relentlessly occupying my mind.
Pink Dreams is somewhat of a self-portrait, like all my paintings: me in a clean and tidy place, unbothered, in my favorite pink mu’umu’u, with a kind of dog I dream I had, alone, looking at the ocean, resting while reading a book, and drinking Turkish coffee. A boat sails; in my head, I'm in the boat, sailing to Turkiye, my birth country, visiting my mother, sister, friends, and relatives, eating delicious food, living my culture, not just representing it.
In my paintings, I mix local Hawaii mu’umu’u culture with Islamic art, so you'll see elements from both. In the case of Pink Dreams, it takes place on the mu’umu’u dress and the Turkish coffee table and set.
I wish every woman who sees my painting, Pink Dreams, is inspired to create her own sanctuary to rest, free from the demands the system places on us as women and as mothers, as we take care of all.
